If you are planning a visit to Portomarín, you can't miss one of its most iconic monuments: the Church of San Nicolás, also known as the Church of San Xoán. This impressive building combines history, architecture and spirituality, and is a true emblem of Galician Romanesque and of the town's resilient spirit.
Built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries by the Order of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, the Church of San Nicolás stands out for its double role as a place of worship and a defensive structure. Originally on the banks of the river Miño, at a strategic point on the French Way, the church was in charge of a pilgrims' hospital and the bridge across the river.
In the mid-20th century, because of the construction of the Belesar reservoir, the church was carefully moved stone by stone to its current location in the centre of Portomarín. You can still see the original numbering on some of the stone blocks, a testament to the effort that went into preserving this legacy.

Built as a fortress-church, San Nicolás has a main façade that combines function and beauty:
A decorated main doorway with three receding archivolts, whose details are attributed to the workshop of Master Mateo, who also designed the Pórtico de la Gloria of Santiago Cathedral.
A large carved rose window, one of the largest in Galicia, which fills the interior with a stunning play of light.
Battlements and defensive towers, with arrow slits and a wall walk that underline its military character.
Since 1931 the Church of San Nicolás has been protected as a Historic-Artistic Monument, in recognition of its cultural and architectural importance not only for Portomarín but for the whole of Galicia.
“A testament to Galician Romanesque art and a symbol of Portomarín's resilience, preserved stone by stone as a legacy for future generations.”
The column capitals feature figures such as the Twenty-Four Elders of the Apocalypse, musicians carved in incredible detail. The tympanum above the main door is decorated with a majestic Christ in Majesty.
The interior of the church is an example of simplicity and function. The single nave is covered by a pointed barrel vault, while the apse has a barrel vault and a half-dome. Two rose windows, one above the triumphal arch and the other on the main façade, fill this solemn space with light.
Two spiral staircases lead to the gallery of the great rose window and to the battlements, where you can imagine the lives of those who once kept watch here.
