Santa Marta Viewpoint

Santa Marta viewpoint: a corner full of history with views over the Miño

A few kilometres from PortoHome in Portomarín, the Santa Marta viewpoint offers a unique experience for anyone wanting to connect with the history and nature of the Ribeira Sacra. On the PR-G 249 Camiño Vello de Aldosende hiking trail, it offers panoramic views of the winding river Miño and the land around it.

A journey into the past

The area around the viewpoint is steeped in history. In the 12th century, King Alfonso VII gave the village of Santa Marta to the monastery of Santa María de Castro de Rei. The monks who settled here devoted themselves to growing vines and looking after fish weirs and watermills. For centuries, Santa Marta supplied the monasteries with wine, eels and even eel pies.

Today, although farming has declined, the stone walls built with great effort by past generations are still standing, offering shade and bearing witness to the region's cultural heritage.
