Camino de Santiago

Portomarín, a highlight of the Camino de Santiago

This old medieval town on the banks of the river Miño is a must-stop for pilgrims walking the age-old route to the tomb of the Apostle Saint James in Santiago de Compostela.

The stage of the French Way that takes pilgrims through Portomarín is an unforgettable experience. It starts in Sarria and covers about 22 kilometres to Portomarín. Along the way, pilgrims can enjoy beautiful countryside, charming villages and, of course, warm Galician hospitality.
Once in Portomarín, pilgrims can rest and recharge, enjoy delicious Galician food in one of the local restaurants and explore the town's fascinating historic sites, such as the Church of San Nicolás and the Portomarín bridge, which was rebuilt stone by stone on a nearby hill when the Belesar reservoir was built.

The next stage of the Camino de Santiago takes pilgrims from Portomarín to Palas de Rei, a walk of about 25 kilometres through beautiful scenery and lush woodland. This stage is a chance to connect with nature, reflect on the journey and enjoy the company of other pilgrims along the way.
